Reducing Impacts of EMF's

Electromagnetic fields or EMF’s are invisible electric and magnetic frequencies that form energy waves or radiation. These can come from both man-made and natural sources and in fact the Earth naturally gives off a form of EMF known as the Schumann Resonance. Connecting with this natural EMF can help to relax us, create healing and cell regeneration. This is why getting out in nature is so good for us. However, other EMF’s - those called electro-smog that are created by electrical devices and technology are the ones that can often impact us negatively (1). Radio Frequency EMF’s (RF EMF’s) are specific EMF’s produced by wifi, mobile phones & towers, and bluetooth devices.

Are there Health Impacts from RF EMF’s?
There is much debate around the specific health impacts of RF EMF’s with the standards set by most governing bodies not being protective of human health (2). Many countries, including Australia, base their safety guidelines on the Thermal Damage Model (3). This model is based on the amount our cells are heated when exposed to RF EMF’s. This model does not take into account a growing body of evidence that shows RF EMF’s have a biological impact. Nor does it look at the safe exposure of EMF's to babies, children and teenagers as the test dummy is based on the parameters of a 6 foot adult male. Belpomme et al states that "this is a particular concern in children, given the rapid expansion of use of wireless technologies, the greater susceptibility of the developing nervous system, the hyperconductivity of their brain tissue, the greater penetration of radiofrequency radiation relative to head size and their potential for a longer lifetime exposure." Much of the ongoing contention around EMF safety is centered around whether long-term low level exposure can trigger biological responses and impinge people’s well being. A large and growing body of evidence shows that it does.
Researchers have found RF EMF’s impact the biological aspects of our bodies because we are essentially bio-electrical beings. Our nervous system, muscles and heart function all depend on the movement of charged particles to function properly. Many of our other systems (hormonal, sleep, digestion etc) work through pulsing or cycles which can be negatively impacted by the overriding waves of RF EMF (4)(5)(6)(7).
Symptoms of RF EMF Exposure.
The symptoms and signs of RF EMF exposure are diverse and can also be vague, they include:
Sleep disturbances & Insomnia
Accelerated aging
Unexplained headaches
Restlessness, irritability
Anxiety &/or Depression
Tiredness & fatigue
Dizziness
Tinnitus
Brain fog
Memory issues
Blood sugar fluctuations
Loss of appetite, nausea
Weight loss or gain
Heart palpitations
Muscle aches and pains
Skin reactions
Tingling sensations
Frequent infection or illness
Some of the things you can do.
There are many things that we can do to limit our exposure and to help protect our health. These include:
Reduce Your Cell Phone Use - keep your phone on airplane mode when it is not being used. Don’t ‘wear’ it on your body, use the speaker or a low EMF shielded wire and air-tube headset. Only use when reception and battery levels are good. Distance is your friend.
Reduce or eliminate your use of wireless devices - switch to ethernet where you can. If you do decide to use wifi then turn it off at night or when not in use.
Stimulate Nrf2 pathways to boost detoxification - Eat more cruciferous veggies like broccoli, kale, cabbage and rocket; polyphenol foods like berries, dark chocolate, black beans, artichoke and red onions; make a soy milk latte with cloves, star anise, nutmeg and turmeric.
Boost your Magnesium intake - EMF’s increase the amount of calcium in the cells leading to a chemical reaction that increases oxidative stress. Balance things out with a good magnesium supplement - one that contains magnesium glycinate is best.
Increase your levels of NAD - NAD helps with energy production and slows aging. Ways to boost NAD include: Fasting; High Intensity Interval Training (but not too much), supplementing with Niacin or eating foods high in this nutrient including fish, pulses and avocados.
Herbs can help - various herbs can assist with protecting and reducing the impact of EMF exposure. These include: Ginger, Rosemary, Spirulina just to name a few. It is best to speak to a Herbalist or Naturopath about which herbs would work best to balance and nourish your constitution and situation.
Flower essences - these are useful if you are finding yourself having an ongoing negative emotional response. When I first learned about the health impact of EMF’s I went into a negative mindset - which wasn’t helpful - it just increased my stress hormones and reduced the ability of my body to do its amazing resilient healing thing.
Grounding, relaxation and meditation - the Earth has its own unique heartbeat known as the Schumann resonance which every living thing has been attuned to since life began. Its frequency range is similar to the alpha brain waves we produce when we are in a relaxed state. Alpha brain waves help us to regenerate cells and promote healing. Salutation to the Earth is a brilliant way to ground as is Dru Yoga's EBR 1 and visualisations of anchoring into the earth.
Get in touch with nature - EMF exposure can lead to loss of cell integrity and an inability for the body to recognise itself. Getting back into nature, enjoying a healthy dose of sun-shine, watching the sunrise or sunset (and getting the benefits of infrared light), or walking barefoot on the sand, all help to reconnect us.
